Fisheries and Oceans Canada, 2021

The wildlife response plan was developed to support Fisheries and Oceans Canada-Canadian Coast Guard’s (CCG) operational plan to test oil spill response technologies (in-situ burn and surface treatment agents) offshore of Newfoundland in 2021. 

2020

BHP, 2020

BHP hired Focus Wildlife to draft a wildlife response plan for an exploratory drilling project in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Equinor, 2020

A wildlife response plan was developed for an exploratory drilling project in Newfoundland and Labrador (Flemish Pass)

Fisheries and Oceans Canada, 2020

Fisheries and Oceans Canada hired Focus Wildlife to develop a marine mammal response plan to provide guidance for decision-making and response management during an oil spill with the potential to impact marine mammals in Canada. 

Ministry of Petroleum and Mining, Kenya Petroleum Technical Assistance Project, 2020

The Ministry of Petroleum and Mining hired Focus Wildlife, in partnership with Polaris Applied Science, to draft an oiled wildlife response and preparedness manual to assist the responsible spill party (RP), oiled wildlife lead response agency, Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS), and other stakeholders during response operations.

Western Canada Marine Response Corporation, 2020

This Wildlife Response Plan (WRP) guidance document was developed to inform WCMRC Spill Response Managers (SRM) and advise the Polluter through immediate actions and decision-making in the event of an oil spill threatening or impacting wildlife. 

2019

BP, 2019

BP hired Focus Wildlife to draft a wildlife response plan for an exploratory drilling project in Newfoundland and Labrador (Scotian Basin).

2018

NCOC Kazakhstan, 2018

The North Caspian Operating Company (NCOC) hired Focus Wildlife, in partnership with Sea Alarm, to draft a wildlife response plan for the North Caspian Sea Kashagan Fields and provide oiled wildlife response training to NCOC management and staff. Focus Wildlife traveled to Kazakhstan several times to facilitate the development of local resources that could be mobilized during a release. 

Canadian Pacific Rail, 2018

Focus Wildlife was hired by Canadian Pacific Rail to write a comprehensive wildlife response plan for CP Rail’s operations throughout British Columbia.

M/V Manolis L., 2018

Focus Wildlife was hired by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) to write a wildlife response plan to support oil removal and salvage operations of the sunken ship Manolis L. (Twillingate, Newfoundland). In addition to the contingency plan, DFO hired Focus Wildlife to provide technical expertise and operational support to Incident Command during salvage operations. Focus Wildlife remained on stand-by with equipment and additional personnel in case of a spill.

2016

Enbridge Energy Partners and Liquid Pipelines Wildlife Planning, 2016

Enbridge hired Focus Wildlife to draft a wildlife response guidance document and incident-specific wildlife response plan template for their North American operations.

InterPipeline Wildlife Planning, 2016

InterPipeline contracted Focus Wildlife to write a comprehensive wildlife response plan for their operations throughout Canada.

Kinder Morgan Wildlife Planning, 2016

Kinder Morgan hired Focus Wildlife to develop a wildlife response plan for their operations in British Columbia and Alberta.

2015

Western Canada Spill Services Wildlife Planning, 2015

Focus Wildlife was contracted to provide wildlife planning services, including wildlife equipment consultation, for spill response in British Columbia and Alberta.

2014

IPIECA Wildlife Response Preparedness, 2013–2014

Focus Wildlife was contracted as a contributing author to the 2014 IPIECA Good Practice Guide Wildlife Response Preparedness: Good Practice Guidelines for Incident Management and Emergency Response Personnel.

Kinder Morgan Wildlife Planning, 2014

Kinder Morgan hired Focus Wildlife to conduct a site assessment of the terminal in Edmonton and to write a general deterrence plan for their operations in British Columbia and Alberta.

Enbridge Northern Gateway Wildlife Planning, 2014

Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipelines contracted with Focus Wildlife to provide wildlife planning services for the proposed Northern Gateway Project.

2013

Hawai’i Division of Forestry and Wildlife Avian Botulism Project, 2013

Focus Wildlife was contracted by the Hawai′i Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife, to provide recommendations, animal care guidelines, and training documentation for capturing and rehabilitating birds with avian botulism. The Avian Botulism Manual was jointly developed by Focus Wildlife and the Hawai’i Wildlife Center.

2012

Enbridge Deterrence Project, 2012–2014

Focus Wildlife was contracted by Enbridge Energy Partners to design and produce wildlife deterrence equipment kits to be used in the event of a wildlife impact. The deterrence kits provide a first line defense for mitigating further wildlife impacts.

Caspian Sea Wildlife Response Planning, 2012–2014

Focus Wildlife was contracted by Shell/NCPOC and Oil Spill Response Limited to partner with Sea Alarm Foundation to develop a Wildlife Response Plan for use in the event of an incident in the Caspian Sea. The wildlife planning efforts include a site visit, wildlife deterrence and response planning recommendations, and training local wildlife rehabilitators and stakeholders in the event of an incident.

US EPA Region 5 Site Survey, 2012

Focus Wildlife was contracted by the United States Coast Guard and the Environmental Protection Agency to assess capacity to respond to an oiled wildlife incident in the region. Focus Wildlife made recommendations for improved response capacity and trained local wildlife rehabilitators and disaster response personnel in oiled wildlife response techniques.

Enbridge Wildlife Response Plan, 2012

Focus Wildlife was contracted by Enbridge Energy Partners to develop a Wildlife Response Plan for use in the event of a wildlife impact incident. The plan can be drilled during non-spill times to ensure that the pipeline company is fully prepared to deal with oiled wildlife events.

2011

Sea Alarm Foundation Global Oiled Wildlife Response Network, 2011–Present 

Focus Wildlife participates as a member of the Sea Alarm Foundation Global Wildlife Response Team in developing wildlife response plans, participating in training wildlife responders and responding to international oiled wildlife events.

Hawai’i Division of Forestry and Wildlife Nene Relocation Project, 2011

Focus Wildlife was contracted by the Hawai′i Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife, to provide animal care support and consultation for the capture, care and relocation of 500 Nene geese over a five year period. Focus Wildlife trained department personnel in animal care techniques and created protocols for the care, husbandry, medical testing and transportation of Nene.

2010

Enbridge Deterrence Plan, 2010

Focus Wildlife was contracted by Enbridge Energy Partners to develop an effective Wildlife Deterrence Plan that may be used to mitigate wildlife impacts proactively or in the event of an unintended oil spill. 

Hawai’i Wildlife Center Facilities Planning, 2010

Focus Wildlife was hired by the Hawai’i Wildlife Center to assist with planning facilities, including indoor hospital caging, outdoor conditioning pens and pools, and wash facilities for oiled native Hawaiian wildlife.

2009

BC Hydro Energy Contingency Plan, 2009

Focus Wildlife was contracted by a hydroelectric company to evaluate potential sources of contamination and hazards to wildlife. Consultation on site-specific species hazards and deterrence methods was also provided.

Suncor Oil Sands Site Survey and Deterrence Plan, 2009

Focus Wildlife was contracted by industry to evaluate wildlife hazards and to develop a plan to deter and mitigate site-specific hazards.

2008

M/V New Carissa Salvage Operation, Wildlife Response Plan, 2008

Focus Wildlife was contracted by Titan Salvage/NRC Environmental Services to develop an incident specific oiled wildlife response plan for the salvage operation of the grounded M/V New Carissa in Coos Bay, Oregon. Further, Focus Wildlife was on alert for the duration of the operation to provide wildlife response management and operation services to a product release incident.

Canadian Department of National Defense, Oiled Wildlife Contingency Plan, 2008

Department of National Defense contracted Focus Wildlife to develop a proactive and progressive Wildlife Contingency Plan that can be utilized at the time of wildlife impact incidents and can be drilled during non-spill times to ensure that DND is fully prepared to deal with oiled wildlife events.

Mobile Facility Development Project, 2008

Focus Wildlife was contracted by NRC Environmental Services to develop an oiled wildlife mobile facility concept that can be utilized by industry in the state of Washington during oiled wildlife incidents. The resulting concept is regulatory compliant and developed to offer a highly functional and adaptable product.

2007

Washington State Oiled Bird Resource Requirements Study, 2007

Focus Wildlife completed an oiled wildlife response resource study for Washington State Department of Ecology, including facility, equipment, supplies and personnel requirements, along with assessment of varying scenario impacts on these resource needs. 

2006

Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Response Trailer Project, 2006

Because of changing regulations in oiled wildlife rehabilitation, WDFW needed to reconfigure their oiled wildlife response trailer. Focus Wildlife reorganized the trailer by converting it to a functional field stabilization unit without removing any of its original infrastructures. All obsolete inventory and equipment was removed from the trailer and a new inventory system put in place.

NRCES Trailer Project, 2006

NRC Environmental Services, an oil spill response organization in Washington State, owns two designated “wildlife trailers” that contained outdated and obsolete equipment and inventory. NRCES contracted Focus Wildlife to reconfigure the trailers so that they would comply with Washington State regulations in a Tier 4 oil spill incident. One unit was redesigned and equipped as an oiled wildlife wash trailer while the second was converted into a field stabilization unit. In addition, a Tier 4 inventory list was compiled for both trailers.

10,000 Tonne Certification Exercise, Vancouver Harbor, 2006

Focus Wildlife successfully tested and utilized the newly developed regional “Wildlife Branch” in this Transport Canada certification drill with Western Canada Marine Response Corporation.

2005

Wildlife Branch Development Project, BC 2005–Present 

The British Columbia Ministry of Environment, Canadian Wildlife Service, Environment Canada and Burrard Clean Operations contracted Focus Wildlife to develop a functional Wildlife Branch to incorporate into the Incident Command System for oil spill response in British Columbia. Prior to this, the Wildlife Branch in BC consisted of hazing un-oiled animals only. FW used existing Wildlife Branch structures used in the United States as templates, but adjusted them to regional characteristics of British Columbia. 

Oiled Sea Otter Equipment and Personnel List, 2005

Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) contracted Focus Wildlife to compile an equipment, inventory and personnel list for a Tier I oiled sea otter response effort. This information was incorporated into the Sea Otter Response Plan for the Sea Otter Recovery Implementation Group.
